
The assassin's leader reaches the room where "Sakamoto" is staying, but does not find his target. On December 10, 1867, assassins raid the Omi Inn in Kyoto to kill "Sakamoto Ryoma". When referring to the imposter character pretending to be Sakamoto, the summary will refer to him in quotation marks as "Sakamoto Ryoma".

Throughout this summary, the names Sakamoto Ryoma and Saito Hajime will be used interchangeably to refer to the same character, as he goes by both. He leaves his home and his brother behind and flees to Kyoto, where he joins the Shinsengumi with the false identity Saito Hajime, in order to track down and kill the Tennen Rishin-ryū user that murdered Toyo and prompted the Tosa coup d'état. Set during the chaotic Bakumatsu period, Sakamoto Ryoma goes into hiding after taking the fall for the death of his mentor Yoshida Toyo. The list below concerns the original game.
